“Chelsea Galleries Reaction” Field Trip

“Chelsea Galleries Reaction” Field Trip

Richard Hughes
Our class went to a variety of Galleries in Manhattan as part of our 5th field trip and one of the first galleries we stopped at was the Anton Kern Gallery. When I went into the gallery I was amazed at what was there and considered art. Clearly I need to make my decision to “pretend purchase” as an “art collector” I would not purchase anything in this gallery. The reason why I wouldn’t is because as you can see in the picture the gallery is made up of huge displays of cement that look like they are walking.

20130417_115545.jpgThe Gallery also had other simple items on display. Like the hexagon square item in the picture. All of the artwork that was on display was done by Richard Hughes. I was surprised at how much some of these artworks cost. Some of the items were very pricey. However, even though the artwork was an intriguing display of cement that was “seemly walking” it just seems too big and too bulky to have in one’s house. I am not saying that this type of artwork isn’t creative but it takes up a lot of space and it would defiantly be a lot of money to store.

20130417_121048.jpgI really I loved the gallery of Yossi Milo Gallery. We walked in and I saw for the first time what we have been learning about in class on the videos we watch, the “photos in motion.” This gallery was covered in wall to wall artwork of Charles Freger’s. The press release paper that was given to me helped explained more about his artwork. According to the press release paper it was said that Freger was in search of the “Wild Man.” This “Wild Man” was a century year old legendary figure that goes through a cyclical pattern life. These are some of the cycles of life that were on display at the gallery. Some of them were called the changing of the seasons, special religious holidays, rites of passage, and life and death.
The titles were interesting according to the way the artist displayed the mythical creatures. These are images of humans dressed as mythical creatures. I found out that these are traditional costumes crafted from layers of animal skin from local plants, bones, and antlers. As a collector I find it very important to know this type of information. It gives more character to the pieces of artwork. It also gives it a more appeal to a potential buyer. Also one thing that is good about this artwork is that if I wanted to buy it, the framed art seems easy enough to store.

Project #3: Illustrate a Story

In this project illustrated stories via story Corp, I listen to alot of stories that had to do with immigration. This is a topic that is long overdue for discussion. This peculiar story caught my attention because back in 1933 a gentleman by the name of Ruben Aguilar was deported from Chicago, Ill. where he was born as an American citizen and shipped off to Mexico and he didn't even speak Spanish. In his story he expresses how back then hundreds of thousands of people were forced to be deported without due process, even though they were American citizens.

He says that he was enrolled in the army and was allowed back into the country. he also says, "I grew up when this happened" this means that during the time of war and the great depression and all his struggles he never forgot how horrible his country treated him as a child. The narrator asks "how he would like to be remembered," Ruben responds by saying, "I was born in this country, and I would like to died in this country" you can tell that he was crying because he said, "that is something you never forget."

Ruben told this story to his friend Bill Luna and now is remembered and recorded for the US Library of Congress.

Link to listen to his story: Ruben Aguilar and Bill Luna | StoryCorps

here is a illustration that I drew and I feel depicts the story for the whole issue that would support Ruben and now what is called the Freedom Act.

hope you like my narrative story about Ruben. I truly hope we can be One Nation, One Voice, and One Country someday. Leave a comment if you'd like.... your classmate, Veronica

"Favors" my act of kindness [Extra Credit]

"Favors" my act of kindness

Artist Priscilla Stadler is challenging people to do great things and to put aside stereotypes. She is reaching out to our class "Intro to Art" and asked us to be apart of "art" movement and "favors." At first I was skeptical but I decided to try to see if an opportunity would come along. Because now days you can't just go knocking on a strangers door and say hey let me help you with that you might get clobbered on the head.

computer virusesSo it happens that an opportunity did present itself right when I got home. You see I was approached by my neighbor she had asked me to look at her laptop. She was complaining about the videos not working and she believes that she has a "virus" in the laptop and do I know what I could do to help her. I said sure no problem this would work out great for me. I began to work on the laptop and she was right the functions were failing and the Microsoft essentials security program hadn't been updated in over a year.
I knew then it would take me hours to do the job she offers to pay me $40 dollars to fix it but because of the "Favors" that I am trying to be nice and I reject the money. I began by rebooting her system and followed it up by updating adobe flash player and also Java programs. I then reinstalled the Microsoft Essentials Security for the viruses. Ran a full scan on her system in the laptop mind you I got home about 2:30pm I then noticed that my older son came home from school and that was around 5:30pm. He was very hungry and asked me to make him some food I asked him if he could wait until the system was done installing the updates and he gave me a kiss on the cheek and said sure mom I am going to play xbox then. I then was asked by my neighbor how much longer and then her husband gets home and wants to yell at me for being on "their" laptop. I then explained I was trying to do a "favor" and he says "stop all the programs that your running because you will probably just break it and then I will have to pay the Chinese people to fix it."
I was in shock and amazed how he had decide to be so rude. I did as he asked and shut all the "running" programs down. I then went to my room and fell out on my bed of exhaustion. I tried to do a good deed but I am amazed at how some people are ungrateful at the simplest acts of kindness. The worst part was I wasted all that time and I could of been making some food for my children for when they get off of school. I ended up feeling horrible as a mother because I blew off my son to help my neighbor and it got me yelled at. I hope in the future someone will appreciate the nice things I do for them.

my "fake" Picasso for Lib 110 class

My "fake Picasso"

My title: "Behind the Curtain"
This is my "fake" Picasso, it is this bright colorful crayon drawing. For this assignment we were supposed to find a painting done by an artist that inspires us. Out of the choices that we had, I felt closest to Picasso.  I wanted to use the simplest kind of form through Picasso cubism era with my own twist. I did use a lot of different bright colors like red, green, blue, pink, and a blend of orange. I was exposed to art at a very young age and have always enjoyed the likes of Picasso and his work. I decided for my piece of artwork I wanted to combine his types of art and bring them together. I find the woman in the painting is expressing her femininity in a most graceful way. She is elegant, beautiful, and at her most vulnerable. I imagined the water could be either cold or hot and that would make her skin color change and react to the different temperatures of the water.
The woman allows Picasso to share her “bath time” especially with him
"Seated Bather" (c1930)
I believe that this artwork is truly unique and expresses a side of romances in Picasso. Also you may have notice that I didn't try to make my "fake" Picasso like the original. As you can see in this original oil painting he uses lighter colors and not as much blocking as I did. The original art as seen here is called "Seated Bather"(c1930) oil on canvas. It is not said why Picasso did this oil painting at the MOMA but it does leave your mind open to imagination.

Design in Our Lives field trip #3

For this assignment "Design in Our Lives" I am supposed to describe how objects have different functionality. We went to the MOMA for our third field trip and our class visited the third floor where I saw a lot of everyday items that I would use in my home. To me functionality has the ability to turn one object into another and make it have the ability to work in someone’s everyday life. Some of the best designs in the world are based on “purpose and function.”

When a designer decides to change one particular item like recycled parts into something else like this green chair here at the MOMA, to me the end result is simply and elegant. This kind of furniture is made into an “elegant forms" that are made with "high functionality" for the home that could be for the everyday consumer. This item, like this green chair has an “ergonomic designs” and is made to be an uncomplicated item that has maximum comfort, a long serviceable life, and a minimal environmental footprint.

The next thing that I saw in the museum that I thought would be of “high functionality” is this digital wind map. Even though it is not a chair, a desk, or a vase made of bees wax. I found it to be interesting because it gives the directional forces of the weather by wind. As I stood there for at least five minutes watching the interactive map it gave detailed information that shows how that the environment is ever changing rapidly and these changes are forcing the “artic wind” to be forced in an “downward motion.” (As you can clearly see in the photo.) This downward motion is now making the northern states to be stuck in a “cold freezing” and it is making the temperatures lower than the “normal.” Scientist are trying to figure out how these changes will affect us in the future and the way we live. To me that is very important to know because if you have to “live” in these northern states and if the temperature drops suddenly, you and your family would freeze to death if you didn't know what to do. So knowing what is happening in the weather and the “ever changing environment” to me is very important to be able to react to any type of situation.

This next piece of art work is very puzzling to me it seems that it has no or "low functionality" at all. The core of the design is a rubber piece holding together a bunch of pieces of wood that stick out and attach to flat piece of rubber or a stopper. (As showed in the photograph.) When I looked closer it seemed like the designer took a lot of "bathroom plungers" and stuck them together and made it into a work of art. I could not seeing any “ergonomic use” for this item other than maybe rolling it down a hill to see what would happen. But in comparisons to the “green chair” and being able to sit on this. I don't think so, it seems I might get poked if I sat on it and it might hurt.

The last item I am very confused about because the artist describes this piece as a “basic home” to me it looks similar to a type of weather balloon rather than a “home.” The artist made these “polyester transportable homes” out of the idea that the homeless people could use them and they would be inflated by the heat from the streets and they would remain inflated. I take it the artist has never been to New York can you imagine a bunch of these houses on the streets in a row. I can only image mean people would pop them or they seem thin enough to pop on their own. I guess that is why it is “low functionality” item and in a museum because in real life it wouldn't work out so well, in my opinion.

Lastly I realized that whether an item is “high or low functionality” it truly depends on how you might use the item in your everyday life. I believe that when it comes to “art and design” it is two different things. Art is made up of "creativity" and design is used to create "form and functionality." Even though they are similar they are utilized differently.

Hope you enjoy my ideas about “Design in Our Life’s” leave comment or like thanks.
